Land

In 1982, scientists at Exxon accurately predicted that by the year 2019, the Earth would hit a carbon dioxide concentration of 415 parts per million and a temperature increase of 1 degree Celsius. The company circulated an internal report which said that the consequences of climate change could be dramatic, and that a significant reduction in fossil fuel consumption would be necessary to avoid catastrophe.
Exxon doubled down on fossil fuels, investing heavily in fracking, off-shore drilling, and pushing climate change denial, despite what they already knew. For over a decade Exxon purchased ads in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal that created doubt and confusion around an issue they’d understood since 1982.
